THE MONUMENTS

Location | Enid, OK
Commissioned By | NBC Oklahoma's predecessor.

H’s first monument at a time when not a lot of public art was being done. It was a learning curve and he figured he made about $3.00 per hour when he was done. This sculpture later became a symbol of the Cherokee Strip Land Run of 1893, used on a U. S. Postage stamp, and was the Symbol of Enid for many years.

This commission came about because of H's relationship with Nate Fleming's family. (His Aunt Margaret Wright is one of my closest friends). After the plane crash that killed 10 OSU basketball players, coaches and media, H was contacted to do a memorial. Still grieving from the loss of our first grandchild, I believe H put his grief into this sculpture. At a meeting at OSU, H drew his design on a napkin. It was approved and he sculpted the piece. I think it is one of 2 his monuments that looks like him.

This was a competitive commission. H sculpted Will Rogers standing and spinning a rope (Cherokee Kid) for his presentation. At the meeting with airport officials, we suggested that a 6' bronze of a standing figure would be lost in front of the airport and that they needed something larger. He got the commission and sculpted Will on his horse Teddy.

This piece was commissioned by the Oklahoma Centennial Commission, Folks from the AQHA came to inspect it during the process as H wanted to represent the perfect" Quarter Horse. H could sculpt or draw a horse in his sleep. He knew every muscle and what it would do at any given time. He was also very critical (mostly privately, but not always) of sculptures of bad horses.

Another competitive commission. Lots of research was done for this as always to be historically accurate. We were escorted from the foundry in Norman by law enforcement all the way from Norman to Ft. Smith when we delivered it. It was wonderful to see the pride in the local and state officers drop off and pick up as we traversed Oklahoma. Was finished after H's lung transplant.

Mike Holder is a persistent man. H was about to start working on Pistol Pete for OSU and Mike talked H into pushing that back. We met Boone when he was in his 80s and Mike wanted him 25 years younger and Boone wanted to be 10 pounds lighter. When I watched H sculpt this, sometimes from life with Boone sitting for him, I wished they had met 25 years earlier.

Again, Mike Holder. H declined this piece as sports figures are not really his thing. But the best sculptor for sports figures Blaire Buswell was not available. H said no several times then Mike started sending H photos of really bad Barry Sanders sculptures and H finally said. ''I'll do it". Again, Pistol Pete was pushed back.

Mo and Richard Anderson wanted something for their Buffalo Junction corner so H sculpted a Buffalo for them, however they wanted it to be very colorful. This is H's only sculpture that had to be patinated (colored) by a guy that paints motorcycles for a living.

H met Pistol Pete when he was 5 years old. H rode his pony in the Cherokee Strip Days parade in Enid and when he got in front of the Judge's stand, he reared up his pony. For that, H won 1st place in the 10 and under division and part of the prize was getting to sit on Frank Eaton's lap and hold his gun. It made quite an impression on H. Sadly, H died before he finished this piece so his friends Paul Moore and John Rule came to H's studio, used H's tools and followed H's design to complete the monument. It was dedicated on September 6, 2024. The only thing missing that day was H.
